Topic: Disaster ! Bonnet repair reqiuired !
 Posted: 29 November 2006 at 5:37pm

Hi

Black arm band time as my new pride and joy of two weeks (T350C) was hit by a large stone this morning!

It dug a gouge 1" long and 1mm deep with the paint cracked at the edges to a depth of 1 mm into the fibreglass through the paintwork. It now requires either a repair or as i am pain in the arse and hate mended things, more likely, a bonnet replacement.
Any ideas as to whether such a gouge can be repaired to such an extent as to be totally invisibe to close inspection and impossible to detect by touch?

In either case, its off to utilise the expertise of Dream Machines.......... Watch this space

There shouldn't be any reason why a superficial fibreglass gouge cant be invisably repaired.
It could get very expensive having to replace a bonnet due to minor damage, and depending on the colour - most bodyshops may insist on having to blend the colour into adjacent areas such as wings and nose section to get the bonnet to match, which creates extra work.
A small repair - with the colour faded out into the bonnet and finally re-lacquered should do it fine.

Andy,

if you have a look at this thread in the Chimaera forum, you will see the gel coat crazing on my 350i that was easily repaired at a bodyshop and is now totally invisible to hand and eye.

Hi, remember the car being constructed out of fibre glass has it's bonuses and down falls. Yes in an impact there can be stress cracks which come to light later. However this sounds like nothing more than a deep scratch, a very annoying one but a perfect repair should be possible. Now the downside, with fibre glass preparation is everything so use a good company, I would go for this option..a repair.

Mabuhay - V8 engines, just like deadlines, I like the whooshing noise they make as they go flying by!

When you said Black Arm band...I thought it had been written off!!Shocked

Glad its just stone damage....if you see what I mean Smile Confused

Hopefully Dream Machines can get it sorted without a full bonnet jobby.

Good blokes there from what I hear.

Good Luck with the repair.
