The Goodwood festival of Speed 12th - 14th July 2002

The Festival of Speed is far more than just a hillclimb - it can justifiably claim to be the world’s biggest and most diverse classic motorsports event. It’s the only occasion where you’ll see in action the greatest competition cars and star drivers from the entire history of motorsport - everything from 19th Century steam carriages to current Formula One, fabulous racing motorcycles; 2500bhp Land Speed Record cars alongside engineless soapbox racers; plus motorsport legends like Moss, Surtees, Brabham and Andretti rubbing shoulders with today's hottest properties such as Jenson Button and Richard Burns.

But it's not all about action on the hill. Since the inaugural meeting was held in the picturesque parkland surrounding Goodwood House in 1993, the Festival has become established as the key event in historic motorsport's social calendar. Unrestricted access to the paddocks means that spectators and autograph hunters can get closer to the cars and drivers than at almost any other meeting. Away from the bustle of competition, you can relax with a picnic on the lawns of the House among some of the most beautiful and innovative automotive creations, which are judged in the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ design competition. You can explore the exciting displays of our many Exhibitors, or seek an adrenaline rush from the Festival's interactive entertainment, including driving simulators and tank rides. Children will delight in the special amusements to be found at theJunior Festival of SpeedThe Festival is motor racing's equivalent of Ascot or Wimbledon, an extravaganza of sound and colour that has been described as 'the garden party of the Gods'. In combination with the rich period theatre of our Motor Circuit Revival Meeting, the Festival of Speed ensures that Goodwood is unrivalled throughout the world.

Goodwood’s relaxed ‘garden party’ atmosphere attracts many of motorsport’s biggest names, both past and present, to come and enjoy a fun weekend of driving, free from the pressures and hassle so often experienced elsewhere. The Festival of Speed paddock is perhaps the only place in the world where you can approach, talk to and seek autographs from perhaps 50 world-famous drivers and personalities without encountering frustrating restrictions such as barricades, obstructive minders and unwilling, reclusive stars. Visitors to Goodwood have traditionally treated the drivers with courtesy and respect, therefore encouraging them to interact with the public in a uniquely informal, friendly and patient manner. Nowhere else are you more likely to come face to face with your motoring hero and chat as if you were dear friends.

The Festival of Speed’s unique ability to attract the top works Formula One teams is its key strength, and already five teams confirmed for 2002. Nowhere else in the world can you get so close to the latest and greatest cars and drivers.

This year, just one week after the British Grand Prix, Goodwood will throng to the sound of the Williams-BMW, McLaren-Mercedes, Renault, Toyota and BAR-Honda in action on the hill. A privately-owned 2000 Ferrari F1-2000 will be driven on the hill, and we are expectant that the Ferrari Works Team will also bring a 2001 championship-winning car.

Look out in the paddock for familiar faces such as David Coulthard, Ross Brawn, Murray Walker, Martin Brundle, Frank Williams, Patrick Head, David Richards and Adrian Newey.
