East Sussex TVRCC 'Bottle Wall'
The 'world famous' (well everyone at le Mans knew
about it!) East Sussex region 'bottle wall'. This was
only made possible by extreme dedication by a number
of Club Members. For those who don't know, the 'bottle
wall' is a tradition at Le Mans. Every group on each
campsite drinks as much beer as they can (only to be
sociable!) and piles the empties in a heap. In some
cases these have been known to form a wall, but mostly
the effects of too much French beer makes wall building
haphazard to say the least. Stray footballs account
for most of the remainder.
Being truly dedicated and bearing in mind that child labour was
outlawed during the Industrial revolution TVRCC East Sussex brought
along their own 'wall builder' (sorry I didn't catch his name but
he is in the bottom photo below - kindly supplied by Tony Connor).
I happened to wander onto their campsite at 10.30 on Sunday morning
to be given a beer and told to get it drunk quick, just in time
for the 'topping off' ceremony. Remember this was created without
glue - just a steady hand! but more impressively they only added
the bottle tops afterwards. Although I have it on authority that
they had a surgeon on their team who screwed the tops back on to
form the TVR logo.
I was subsequently pressganged into taking
photos of all the team - with all their cameras
(I looked like a Japanese tourist) --
Many thanks to Nicky Evans for the big picture showing (in her
words) "all those who sacrificed themselves for the beer wall" -
good effort!
