The Chimaera was first shown at the 1992 Motor Show at NEC and first customer cars were delivered the following summer. the car quickly became the most popular TVR with over 5000 cars being delivered. It was finally replaced by the Tamora in 2002. The cars were originally offered with a choice of 4.0 litre (240bhp), 4.0 litre HC (High Compression - 250bhp) or 4.3 litre (275bhp). However, the 4.3 was soon dropped from the line up to be replaced by a 5.0 litre using the same engine as the Griffith 500. The 4.0HC also disappeared and the line up was then joined by the 4.5 litre which is supposed to be the smoothest of them all. |
The original Rover engine was replaced by the "Serpentine" unit in 1994 whilst the original Rover LT77 gearbox was replaced by the Getrag T5 gearbox in April of that year. T5 fitted cars are easy to identify as the internal door release mechanism is situated in its own enclosure in the centre tunnel; LT77 fitted cars have the door release alongside the gear lever.
