Curborough is where Jes Firth and Simon Cole duked it out in true gladiatorial fashion in 2005 – on that occasion Jes was quickest but lost out on algorithm. The event is two laps of a tight and twisty kart track but, in the dry, the straights are long enough to give the Class B guys the opportunity to stay on terms with the lighter, more nimble Class A cars of which there are 7 in total. I expect to see Geoff Stallard (List 1A Vixen), Stewart Lobley (List 1B Vixen) and Ian Bannister (List 1B 3000S) all in the hunt for silverware – any one of these has the potential to take home the winner's 25 points as well. Current 2 lap course record for Class A cars is 66.31 held by Geoff Stallard (16 Jul 2006). In Class B we have all the constituents of a classic contest and I won’t even begin to predict a winner. Matthew Oakley (5.2 Griff), Paul Edwards, (T350C) and Jes Firth (Cerbera 4.2) all have 2008 season averages in the 24s each having won several rounds. Firth won his last three outings (Pembrey/Sunday, Abingdon and Lydden) just shading Paul Edwards at two of those. Oakley was truly on the pace at MIRA and Loton where he kept the trophies out of Mr Firth’s hands on both occasions, but Edwards showed recently he has the skill to wring the power and mechanical grip from the T350 with fine victories at Pembrey/Saturday and Goodwood on 28th June. Just to add a little friction to this volatile cocktail, new boy Mark Everett has shown true commitment since joining this year and with a relatively low 4 litre handicap, will be up there with the leaders. Simon Smith’s Tamora could do well if he can hit the sweet-spot on the day. Current 2 lap course record for Class B cars is 62.29 held by Simon Cole (16 Jul 2006). There are 21 TVRs entered for Curborough (nr Lichfield – WS14 0PA). The question is: will the faster cars have enough room to take the prize away from Class A? The weather could be the deciding factor.
